OpenFPGA Steering Group Meeting - July 15, 2005

Courtyard Marriott Chicago O’Hare
10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Participating:
OSC, NCSA, Mitrion, Sandia National Lab, University of Cincinnati, University of Manchester (England), SRC, GE Global Research, Starbridge Systems, SGI, Zuse Institute Berlin

The initial hour of meeting discussion focused on two primary areas.
First, to prepare questions from earlier messages for the VTM virtual meeting starting at 12:00. Second, to look ahead and define a vision for the OpenFPGA group.

Recommendations made to start with user group, proceed to standards effort, followed by trade association. Generally accepted as a reasonable way to proceed and focus on creating a user group first.

VTM provide important insight into forming organizations of this type.
Have both users and vendors involved. Many times, vendors provide support for the effort.
VTM also recommended to keep the membership agreement simple and put necessary complexity in bylaws.
Fees and budgets for VTM examples were much higher than expected for OpenFPGA at the onset.

Break for lunch with continued discussions on real needs of the community and vendors, the role of patents and other vendor input on the challenges of standards.

After lunch, topics of the morning were revisited as a foundation for the afternoon discussion. A significant amount of discussion was held on how to evolve standards that were meaningful. The need to increase user participation lead to discussions which helped plan MAPLD and SC05 efforts.

Various action items were identified based on the accumulated discussion.

Meeting ended 3:00 PM CDT.
