OpenFPGA Steering Group Meeting - May 10, 2005

Participating organizations included:
SGI, NCI-ABCC, OSC, Cray Inc., SRC Computers, Sandia National Laboratory, University of Cincinnati, Nallatech, University of Manchester, NASA, NCSC, Starbridge Systems, GE, ZIB, University of South Carolina and Koan Corporation.

Action items from prior meetings were reviewed.

  • Summary of prior meeting was accepted for posting at the OpenFPGA web site.
  • The availability of the shared work area for the OpenFPGA group was delayed due to technical concerns.
  • The request for an FPGA related activities calendar was discussed and it was suggested that RCNewsNow be looked to fulfill this need.
  • The meeting to develop a formal organizational structure moving forward was held. The majority of the meeting focused on these developments.
  • The group agreed to evaluate the forums available through RCNewsNow for their utility to support the OpenFPGA targeted discussion areas.

Members of the steering group volunteered to organize the OpenFPGA BOF at SC 2005.

Forum leads or coaches were selected for the six initial areas of discussion. These coaches agreed to participate and summarize the activity on the forums for the group. It was identified that a disclaimer on items submitted to the forum is needed to warn against sharing potential sensitive information.

Until a more formal structure is adopted, the current steering group will continue to serve as the advisory and decision making body for issues which arise.

In the formative period, no membership fees will be required. The group agreed to have OSC support the group operationally in the formative period. OSC will underwrite a minimal level of support needed through the period. External financial support for the OpenFPGA effort will be directed to OSC as needed or available.

The steering group generally agreed with the direction to define an executive board and an advisory board. The composition of both will be inclusive of academic, governmental, commercial and international interests. The precise composition will emerge in response to specific models evaluated in continued discussions through the next two months.

The group continues to look for viable options for a combined meeting of the steering board.

Action items were identified for the next meeting.

Meeting adjourned.
